Here at Wordy Birds, LLC we believe that all students should have access to research based instructional strategies to support their reading and writing development.  Unfortunately, there is often a barrier to assessing these services.  Depending on where you live, private tutoring can range from $40-$250 per hour. For many families, that level of financial investment isn’t an option.  The Wordy Birds Lesson Pack was born out of a desire to bring an Orton Gillingham inspired lesson framework to families committed to working and learning alongside their struggling students.  We believe that partnering with you on this journey is essential for the success of your child, and that providing lessons aligned with current Science of Reading research will be most impactful for them.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities and affects 1 in 5 people. The Wordy Birds Lesson Pack was created with research based best practices for teaching reading and writing to students who have dyslexia, but the teaching strategies included are BENEFICIAL FOR ALL LEARNERS.

The Lesson Pack is intended for students who have a solid foundation of their consonant sounds, as these are not explicitly taught within the lesson pack. Our lessons begin with direct instruction around the short vowel sounds and then transition into some of the most common digraphs.  Because all students develop at a different rate, understanding your students’ current level in regard to their letter/sound recognition is important.  The content covered in this lesson pack fits in with material typically introduced in the early to mid elementary years but may be suitable for older students who have not yet mastered the included phonemes. 

More importantly, this product is relevant for the parents of dyslexic students of any age.  It's never too early to understand how to best teach your dyslexic child, and the support from our community will be there at every stage of your journey.

First, you'll be introduced to the 5 parts of a lesson.  While watching the 5 Getting Started Mini-Lessons, you'll learn new strategies to support your child today.  You'll be told why we use these strategies and how they help your child.

Inside The Wordy Birds Lesson Pack done-for-you video lessons, you will receive explicit and direct instruction for the following phonemes/graphemes: short vowel sounds for a, e, i, o, and u, sh, -ay, -ck, ee, ch, or, the FSZL Rule, all, the voiced and unvoiced sounds of th, -oy, -ing, -ang, -ong, -ung, ar, wh, oo, -ink, -ank, -onk, -unk, silent e, oi, and ow. 

The lesson pack also contains 5 review lessons throughout, and a bonus lesson on vowels!

The beauty of The Lesson Pack is that it allows each family to meet their child exactly where they are.  Has your child mastered short vowel sounds? Then you can start with digraphs on lesson 6! Have they already mastered the sh, ch, ee, and ay patterns? No problem, start further along in the pack!  Just remember, each lesson builds upon previously taught material, and you want to be certain there aren’t any gaps in understanding if you skip lessons.

Regardless of where your child is currently performing, the instructional strategies we cover can be utilized at all points in the literacy development.

That’s a great question.  One of the great things about OG tutors and OG lessons is the ability of the tutor to adjust their teaching in real time based on what the student in front of them needs.  This Lesson Pack is not a substitute for the skills and experience of a LIVE Orton Gillingham Tutor. The Lesson Pack was created as an option for families that do not have access to such services (either due to time, location, or financial constraints), as it closely follows the lesson framework that we use with our in-person and live virtual lessons. As the grown-up helping your child navigate through this product, you’re acting as a teacher as well.  You’ll learn how to best support them throughout the lesson- how to prompt them to fix errors, effectively encourage, and pause the video lessons as needed to maximize results.
